West Slope as seen from I-90 - rather than follow Burgdorfer's suggestion to traverse beneath this face and ascend the peak via the South Ridge, it makes more sense to just climb the West Slope directly.

Humpback Mountain - West Slope split, April 2006

Going off of a tip from Eric, who had done this tour a week or two prior, I decided to explore Humpback Mountain's West Slope. Plainly visible from I-90, the West Slope reportedly delivered over 1500ft of easily accessed skiable vertical, requiring only a casual four hours round-trip. A perfect 'dawn-patrol' outing, or in my case, a quick fix before catching the Mariners - Angels game later that afternoon, it's suprising that this tour continues to remain in the shadow of more popular Snoqualmie Pass backcountry descents.

After parking the car, I booted up the road for about a quarter mile before continuing on skis. The road makes two switchbacks (stay on main road). At the third switchback/fork, take the left fork and continue upwards on a spur road - it leads to a clearing directly beneath the West Slope. I ascended the West Slope directly to the summit. Riding down from the summit, I enjoyed sun-ripened corn all the way down the West Slope and down the logging road, stopping within sight of my car.

End of road No. 55 (or at least the end of the snow-free road).    Looking up the West Slope - good snow coverage like we've had this year appears to be critical down low, else I'd have battled through alder bushes.    Good ski-terrain potential just southwest of Humpback Mountain.    Looking west over I-90 and South Fork Snoqualmie River Valley from Humpback's summit.    A unique perspective on Snoqualmie Pass and surrounding peaks from top of Humpback Mountain.    The West Slope of Silver Peak looks like it'd make for a worthy ski-objective.    My tracks on the upper-slope.

Overlooking a tributary to the S. Fork Snoqualmie River at Exit 47 with McClellans Butte in distance.    After a suprisingly quick 3-hour car-to-car tour, I once again found myself cruising down I-90, making it back in town in time to catch the M's victory of the LA Angels!    A different view of Safeco Field.
